reconnaissance no. 5

This is our apartment's gratitude tree.  SarKar is such an artsycrafty roommate.  Also, she's just adorable in general.  She's grateful for moms.  I am too.

But my number five is music.

Since I'm already talking about Sarah, I should mention that she has the best taste in music, period.  I love having our living room filled with her tunes and keeping the mood chill and happy, always.

But seriously, music is absolutely incredible.  It's a kind of beauty & poetry that speaks to everyone.  It brings people together, it's an expression of soul & heart, and even someone unreligious can't help but  feel close to God sometimes.

Being the cinephile that I am, music is fundamental to a movie's success.  ET would not be the same without those soaring musical motifs.  It can make or break a film for me.

For my Comms class, we had to keep a media diary for a week.  Music dominated my media consumption exponentially.  It is everywhere.  At work, in restaurants, at the mall, in my living room, on my iPod.  And I love it.  It picks me up when I'm down, it eases my troubles and makes car rides bearable.  I am grateful for the power behind music.

Here are some of my favorite jams of late:

Don't Cry Out - Shiny Toy Guns
Gimme Sympathy - Metric
Tiny Vessels - Death Cab for Cutie
The Cave - Mumford & Sons
Rox in the Box - The Decemberists
Zero - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Little Bribes - Death Cab for Cutie
40 Day Dream - Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros
Hurts Like Heaven - Coldplay
Shut Your Eyes - Snow Patrol

I don't throw this around often, but I also absolutely adore playing the piano.  And, you know, I used to actually be decent.  One day when, like, I'm a mom or whatever, I look forward to filling my home with those same classical riffs that my mom always provided in my childhood.

Prelude in C# Minor - Rachmaninoff (who doesn't love this one)

Also, I'm definitely going to be that mom that STILL rocks out to Backstreet Boys every time "I Want it That Way" comes on the radio.  And sings Justin Bieber in the shower.  Unashamed.

I'm really glad that SarKar brought the gratitude love into our club.
