not even cupcakes could make me feel better about this one

If there's one thing I've learned from reading Dooce, it's that ye need to be not stupid & be careful about what you post about work.

Because trust me, there are plenty of hilarious stories I could share.

However, in light of recent events, a few words must be shared.

To get the news straight, just read this press release in the Salt Lake Tribune.

29. That's a lot.

My job is safe, I'm a poor college student that any bookstore could afford to spend minimum wage on. But some of those 29 were my friends.

I don't know much, but I do know that this will affect my job more than I realize right now.

The last thing my then supervisor said to me before I realized what had happened was, "Lauren, I have a project for you." To the end, he was working.

I learned a lot from those full-time and part-time employees who contributed 20+ years of their lives to a wonderful institution. My experience at my job would not have been the same without them.

It's hard to say why this has been so weird for me. As I said, my job is safe. It's no secret that bookstores EVERYWHERE are suffering, so this didn't come as a complete shock. But man, this weekend was tough. My heart goes out to all who were laid off. I dread going to work tomorrow with the eery feel of uncertainty and disappointment hanging over everyone. It's hard to carry on like usual when so many are now out of work.

Things are changing. And for one who accepts change readily, this change isn't coming to me so easily.

  1. My boss laid off! :( :( :( Everything is really sad and crazy and it'll be interesting to see what happens in the next few days (and I totally know what you mean about having to be careful for what you post about work because they read it!). Next time I see you we should get together and gossip about this, it's such a huge change. Thanks for posting this though, I needed it. :)

  2. :( :( Aw, Kailee I'm so sorry. I totally feel for you. And hey, I think we're in the same FHE group now, so we should definitely gossip about it. I am seriously still in shock, it was so crazy. :(
