*** democracy & journalism ***

One of my first Communications classes taught me that journalism was kind of like the fourth branch of government. The more I have learned about journalism, the more I realize that this is true.

In a way, journalism is there to help us appreciate the three other branches of government. Freedom of speech is a right that the citizens of the United States take for granted all too often. Journalism serves the people.

Democracy allows journalism to flourish and provide citizens with needed information. Without the press, would it matter what was going on Iraq? Would it matter that there was an earthquake in Haiti? Journalism allows the public to grow and to care about their neighbors. It goes hand in hand.
