summer reading

12:58 PM

This is me, October 2000. I'm 90% sure that I'm reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. FOR THE FIRST TIME.

When I was a little girl, my mom and I used to have summer reading contests.

It was exactly like it sounds, a contest to see who could read the most books. Later, we changed it to the most pages when my mom's Jane Austen and Charles Dickens books took a lot longer to read than my Roald Dahl & Judy Blume ones.

I thank my mom for instilling this love of reading in me. Some of my earliest memories are of her reading to me before bed. We would discuss the characters and draw pictures of our favorites. We read all types, Caddie Woodlawn, To Kill a Mockingbird, Betsy Tacy, Anne of Green Gables, The Prydain Chronicles (featured below... it's time for a re-read). We read a whole lot of Nancy Drew books too, and as I got older we laughed and laughed at how ridiculous those books really are.

Though I've found less and less time for reading in the last few years, I still maintain that summer is golden for reading.
So this is my book pile to carry me through the rest of the summer. There's not even a Harry Potter book. IT FEELS SO GOOD TO READ SOMETHING THAT'S NOT A TEXTBOOK.

  1. Summer is TOTALLY meant for reading and nothing else! I've been filling my summer days with magical lands and happy places in books :) I'd always check out sooooo many books from the library when I was younger and didn't have a summer job. But this summer has been spent with a lot of free time, so of course that free time has reading :) best summer ever was when I had a goal of reading 100 books...haha! I got to 75-ish ;)

  2. 100 books, that is AWESOME. I think the most books I've ever read in a year is 300 something, but I was also 11 and had no friends.

  3. You are my hero. Oh, and also, one day I will read Harry Potter for the first time... and I'll call you the second that I'm done with it. :)
